Robert Hanna’s twelfth book, The Fate of Analysis, is a comprehensive revisionist study of Analytic philosophy from the early 1880s to the present, with special attention paid to Wittgenstein’s work and the parallels and overlaps between the Analytic and Phenomenological traditions.

Anyone with any knowledge of the history of civilization it should be evident that over the last century there has been a catastrophic decline in the place and status of philosophy, both in academia and society generally. In this work, Hanna identifies and rigorously analyses the roots of this crisis and its significance, not only for philosophy but for civilization. Contemporary professional academic philosophy, he argues, has evolved into a self-defeating enterprise, dissolving philosophy into the military-industrial-university-digital complex. It is only on the basis of this careful and detailed study of the failures of analytic philosophy, along with challenges to it, that Hanna argues for a radical Kantian metaphysical paradigm shift to humanistic neo-organicism. This is shown to be a philosophy with the potential to cast analytic philosophy into the ash-heap of history and effectively confront and overcome the crisis of reason in Western civilization identified by Husserl. This is an heroic and extremely valuable effort to regain civilizational sanity.

While some chapters of the book read like lucid lectures that wear their erudition lightly and speak to readers familiar with the parlance and tools of contemporary philosophy, others weave a spellbinding yarn of paths taken and missed by mainstream philosophy over the last 100 years, and finally others are tantamount to a manifesto for a philosophy of the future worthy of its Kantian enlightenment tradition.
